The 5 Steps to Meaningful & Productive Coworking
As a connection coach on a mission to cultivate compassionate communities, I'm a strong proponent of collaborative work. Research shows that coworking with others in vibrant community spaces like cafés, meeting rooms or even on Zoom can reap immense benefits for business and personal well-being.
For instance, my friend Sarah, a freelance graphic designer, started attending weekly coworking sessions at her local café. Not only did she find herself more focused and productive during these sessions, but she also connected with a vibrant community of fellow freelancers. Through this network, Sarah landed several new clients and collaborations, and she now credits these coworking sessions as a pivotal factor in her business growth and overall well-being.
Beyond mere productivity, shared work sparks creativity, accountability and meaningful relationships. By plugging into an uplifting community, your inspiration and professional opportunities expand exponentially.
Coworking requires balance between social interactions and focused work. When structured intentionally, it unlocks the best of both worlds so you stay energized and connected yet still achieve flow states for optimal output.
Here is the Heartspace method to cowork with the heart using 5 key steps:
1. Kick-off with Community Bonding
Spend 30 minutes on introductions, discovering common interests and challenges. This social warm-up enhances collaboration.
2. Set Working Intentions
Verbalize specific projects or tasks to accomplish. Voicing goals boost movitvation and accountibility.
3. Engage Focused Sessions
Solo work for 20-25 minute intervals lets you stay immersed in flow. Some groups may want to lengthen this to 30-40 minutes for deeper focus.
4. Recharge Actively
Every few focus sessions, take a good 10 minute break to move, chat, reflect. This maintains energy.
5. Share progress
Discuss achievements for 2-3 minutes each to reinforce accountability and inspiration.
Rinse and repeat the flow!
By anchoring in a supportive community, your connections blossom. Coworking “with heart” sparks idea exchanges, feedback gathering and unexpected opportunities.
While structure optimizes the experience, informal sessions focused on sharing progress can also build wonderful sense of community.
Lean on timers, gentle facilitators and heart-centered intentions. When coworking, progress interweaves tightly with warmth, understanding and compassion between members.
It takes some time for people to get into the structure and building community also takes some warm up time. I allow for a couple of weeks of loose structure until the group knows each other better.
And if you can cowork in person, that's an added bonus! We all need to come out of our caves a bit and connect face-to-face. Combining productive sessions with in-real-life community can have wonderful symbiotic effects.
When I show up to a local coffee shop to engage in this process with others, I always leave inspired and having at least one new idea! I often also leave having met a new connection in the community.
What about you? What has been your experience with coworking? Does it provide any benefit beyond getting stuff done? Have you ever tried using a timer and a sturcture?
